Playlist: October 22

In current rotation on my iPod nano:

*Miss Fat Booty, Mos Def: The first Mos song that I really got into. Also references one of my fav black beauties: Jayne Kennedy.

*It's Okay (One Blood), The Game: If I supported gang rivalry I would totally be a Crip (I grew up on the Southside of Fort Worth, I have no choice), but I still love this song. That Caribbean man is singing his heart out and I like it.

*Mr. Me Too, Clipse featuring Pharrell: I luv the Clipse, they have a really cool sound and always get the best Neptunes beats to complement their lyrics. This song is a quick Clipse classic.

*In A Sentimental Mood, Duke Ellington/Miles Davis/John Coltrane: I got this song from the soundtrack to Love Jones, one of my favorite movies, and have become totally addicted to it, though I am not normally a Jazz fan.

*Seasons Change, Corinne Bailey Rae: This is the really cool song that played during the opening and ending credits of the season premiere of Girlfriends a few weeks ago. Luv the song, Luv Corinne.

*California, Phantom Planet: The theme song to The OC. I am not a fan of the show, but I luv the song. It makes me nostalgic for a place I've never lived.

*Upgrade U, Beyonce featuring Jay-Z: Again, not a fan of the album, but this song is bomb. I luv luv luv the way B goes off at the end with the Foxy-esque rhyme.

*Waiting in Vain, Bob Marley: I always think of the last night of the summer when I hear this song. It was playing in a little bookstore near 116th and Broadway the night before I left New York. Nicole and I went in there after leaving Haagen-Dazs and I bought, "In the Temple of My Familiar" by Alice Walker.

Libras Are The Coolest

"It's easy to spot a Libra. You're the one who's impeccably dressed, and oh so cute, radiating confidence. Fun-loving and kind, you put the C in charming..."

Essence Magazine, October 2006

As part of my birthday week celebration (yes, I get a whole week. October 16-October 22, OK?), I am highlighting my favorite Librans. As air signs, we tend to be easy-going, charming, artistic, and fair, and no one exemplifies these principles more than these 5 diverse stars.

<---Gwen Stefani, October 3

<---Ashanti, October 13

<---Ray Charles, September 23

<---Ashley Simpson, October 3

Kelis: Girl of The Month

I have a little confession. I am majorly, totally, butt-crazy over Kelis (true 90's vixens remember Cher Horowitz using these same adjectives to describe her feelings for Josh in Cluless)!

She started humbly. Another young black girl with two-tone hair....

Sure we liked Caught Out There, but after a few years we forgot about the young Harlem-ite and she was forced to go across the pond with her second release, Wanderland.

But damn we couldn't ignore her Milkshake! When the new tan, stylishly coiffed Kelis bounced onto the track and gyrated through the video (backed by one of Hip-Hop's sexiest poets, Nas), Bad Girls everyone knew we had found our patron saintess.....

She's a bona-fide star now, her short 'do with the razor-cut side brought what many 'round the way girls were doing to the main stream and cemented her status as the anti-B (would Beyonce ever cut her hair, or take out her weave, whichever you prefer?)

"I have no desire to be anything other than what I am. And that's a girl with ideas, dreams and fears like anyone else." --in Trace Magazine.

I love that quote. She's beyond and above being simply fabulous, fierce, or a force. She's a person and revels in the joys, pains, successes and failures that make up the human experience. Kelis was definitely here.

Maybe I Do Have A Future In The Beauty Industry...

Faithful Bad Girl's Guide readers will remember my mid summer ode to C.O. Bigelow's moisterizing but not greasy, tasty Mentha Lip Shine. Well, according to Heart & Soul's October/November issue, Tia Williams, beauty editor turned all-around fabulous lifestyle expert, agrees! Check out a scan of her feature in the magazine (Click on the pic for a larger image). This seasoned beautyista also recommends the gloss! Plus, I own 3 of the 5 Fab Girl Essentials (I'm working on the Hard Candy Make-Up and the Toolkit, give me time).

Join me in patting myself on the back! :)
